Spending time with the grandchildren is one of life’s simple pleasures. But don’t be put off by thinking that our younger generations are only interested in high-tech gadgets. By going back to basics we can show them just how much fun traditional family activities can be…
Cook up a treat!
No matter what age, kids love baking. From sponges to cookie-cutting and decorating gingerbread men, there’s plenty of tasty treats that are quick to whip up and fun to personalise. Cupcakes are particularly entertaining to decorate by using different coloured buttercreams to pipe on top and a variety of fun toppings to sprinkle over.
The art of flower pressing
What better way to show your grandchildren the beauty of spring than by teaching them the art of flower pressing? Kids will love searching your garden to collect pretty flowers and leaves for their project. There’s even more fun to be had when they’re dried – you can use the results to decorate home-made birthday cards, or add a personal touch to photo albums. Traditional flower presses are easily available from most craft stores or online.
Take the plunge
If the family is bickering or bored, take them swimming! The really great thing about swimming is that the whole family can enjoy it together, from grandparents to babies and everyone in between. It’s a fantastic way to get the kids active – plus the sooner your grandchildren can swim, the sooner you can start to feel more relaxed about their safety around water.
A grand day out
The combination of gardens, nature trails, quizzes and tea rooms make National Trust and English Heritage properties a great day out for young and old. You may already be a member – so find out if you can take your grandchildren along for free.
Arrange a family holiday
For some extra quality time with your grandchildren, why not arrange a family holiday together?
